AST SpaceMobile's Comeback: Launching Three BlueBirds in June (2026)

AST SpaceMobile, a satellite internet provider, is gearing up for a June launch of three BlueBirds, aiming to recover from a recent setback. The company, a rival to SpaceX's Starlink Mobile, faced a significant challenge when Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket failed to place AST's BlueBird 7 satellite in a suitable orbit, leading to its eventual descent and incineration. This incident has prompted AST to pivot to SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket for the upcoming launch.

The decision to use SpaceX's rocket is a strategic move, given the company's previous successful collaboration. In 2024, AST utilized a Falcon 9 to launch five first-generation BlueBirds, setting the stage for the upcoming mission. The upcoming launch will feature the second-generation BlueBird, a more advanced satellite with a powerful antenna capable of delivering 120Mbps per cell, a significant improvement over the initial generation.

AST's goal is to provide high-speed satellite internet for smartphones, bridging cellular dead zones. However, the company faces a challenging timeline, aiming to launch 38 satellites in less than seven months. This ambitious plan raises questions about the feasibility of meeting the deadline, especially considering the initial delay in deploying the first-generation satellites.

The competition with SpaceX's Starlink Mobile is intense, as Starlink has already established a strong presence with over 650 satellites, offering services through T-Mobile and various carrier partners. Starlink's cellular service supports messaging, mobile apps, and video calling, albeit with download speeds estimated at 4Mbps. AST, on the other hand, has only seven satellites in orbit, including the BlueWalker 3 test vehicle, and aims for a more comprehensive coverage with 45 to 60 satellites.

Despite the challenges, AST remains optimistic, with President Scott Wisniewski expressing confidence in achieving noncontinuous service in select markets using 25 BlueBird satellites. The company's upcoming earnings call on May 11th is expected to provide further insights into their launch plans and strategies. The race to provide satellite connectivity to smartphones is intensifying, and AST's efforts to catch up with SpaceX's Starlink Mobile will be a key focus in the coming months.
