The power of representation: athletes speak out amidst political divides.
In a heartfelt response to President Trump's criticism of fellow Olympian Hunter Hess, two-time snowboarding champion Chloe Kim shared her thoughts on the importance of athlete voices. Kim, whose parents are immigrants, emphasized the need for unity and compassion, especially during a time of political tension.
"This hits close to home," Kim said, explaining how the U.S. has provided her family with opportunities, but also the right to express their opinions. "We must stand together and support each other."
Hess, a freestyle skier, had expressed his concerns about representing the U.S. during a divisive political climate. Trump's reaction, posted on Truth Social, labeled Hess a "real Loser" for his comments. However, Hess never denied representing the U.S., but rather questioned the alignment of his values with the current political landscape.
Kim's teammates, Maddie Mastro, Bea Kim, and Maddy Schaffrick, echoed similar sentiments. Mastro, a fellow Californian, spoke of her pride in representing Team USA, while also acknowledging the challenges at home. Bea Kim, whose grandparents also immigrated, emphasized the diversity that makes the U.S. strong and unique. Schaffrick, making her Olympic debut, described the Games as a celebration of international unity and friendly competition.
"The Olympics bring us together," Schaffrick said. "It's a reminder of the power of sport to unite nations."
As the 2026 Winter Olympics continue, these athletes' voices serve as a reminder of the complex relationship between sports and politics, and the importance of standing up for one's beliefs.
