NL West Notes: Devers, Bader, Song

The Giants are facing a challenging spring season, with several key players sidelined due to injuries. The club released a series of injury updates on Saturday, shedding light on the condition of some notable names. The most prominent player on the list is Rafael Devers, who is dealing with a left hamstring injury. According to multiple reporters, including Maria Guardado of MLB.com, Devers will be out of action for the next two to four days.
Devers has participated in three Spring Training games so far. His last appearance was on Thursday against the Rockies, and he has been playing at first base in every game this spring. This position was a point of contention with his former team, but he is set to enter his first full season with San Francisco as the primary option at first base.
Harrison Bader, another key player, will not be hitting for the next two days due to a right thumb contusion. He was removed from Friday's game after just one at-bat. Assuming a full recovery, Bader is expected to secure the center field position for the Giants.
Drew Gilbert, on the other hand, is dealing with a left shoulder impingement, which will prevent him from throwing for the next five to seven days. This absence could potentially impact the race for the fourth outfielder spot. Luis Matos, who has spent decent time with the Giants in the past three seasons, is now under pressure for a bench spot from Gilbert, Will Brennan, and non-roster invitee Jared Oliva, among others.
In the bullpen, Erik Miller and Joel Peguero are both making steady progress. Miller is managing lower back tightness and is currently throwing from flat ground, with the expectation that he will return to the mound in a few days. Peguero, on the other hand, is battling hamstring tightness but completed a live bullpen session and is expected to return to Spring Training games next week.
Elsewhere in the division, the Padres are exploring the versatility of Sung-Mun Song, an infielder with a nine-year KBO career. Song has experience at first base, second base, and third base. The Padres are now looking to develop his skills at shortstop and left field, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Despite never having played these positions professionally, the Padres are confident that Song will quickly adapt. 'We just need to get him on the practice field doing those things,' said Stammen. 'And then we can put him in a game.'
The Padres don't have an obvious spot in the lineup for Song, so developing his comfort at multiple positions will allow him to contribute in various areas. Song, a 29-year-old, is coming off two impressive seasons in KBO, including a 25/25 campaign with a 151 wRC+ this past year.
